I started racing after being at the drags and a friend here in Corpus Christi talked me into running my 1967 Mustang 6 cylinder. I won a trophy and that was all it took. While winning 40 trophies with the little six, I was also helping friends with their cars and met Tony Weathers who became my roommate. Tony was a member of Bob Veselka's Funny Car team and a few months later I resigned my radio job and joined the team as well. It was really neat to be so new to the sport and have the opportunity to tour with an AA/FC and meet all of the "big names" in the sport. Some time later my draft notice ended my stay with the Veselka team. After getting out of the USMC I went back into radio and I built a 1966 Mustang 289 Automatic and set the UHRA class record in Houston, which we held for 32 months. During this period I met the late Paul Savadin, who owned a Top Fuel car and we became friends so I helped Paul as much as I could while trying not to get fired at the radio station. Eating, sleeping and breathing racing can do that. During this time, my roommate Jim Henderson who was campaigning a Chopped 32 Ford truck with an injected 392 Hemi in it, turned me on to an old digger chasis. We played with several engines in it from 392 to 289 but settled on a 302 Ford engine and ran it in E / Gas Dragster. By this time, 1975, the gas war hit and I sold the car in Lufkin, Texas. It has been many years since I spent much time at the races, but I'm really looking forward to putting my Corvette through it's paces on area drag strips.
